About An Artist of the Floating World. From the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature and author of the Booker Prize–winning novel The Remains of the Day In the face of the misery in his homeland, the artist Masuji Ono was unwilling to devote his art solely to the celebration of physical beauty. It is 1948. Japan is rebuilding her cities after the calamity of World War Two, her people putting defeat behind them and looking to the future. The celebrated artist, Masuji Ono, fills his days attending to his garden, his house repairs, his two grown daughters and his grandson; his evenings drinking with old associates in quiet lantern-lit bars.

"An Artist of the Floating World" seems as if it was written by an older man , someone close to Ishiguro's age and "The Buried Giant" by a much younger writer. Both books are somewhat melancholy in style and tone, not what I'd call "uplifting" or optimistic and both are beautifully executed in Ishiguro's own inimitable style. Kazuo Ishiguro's 1986 novel, An Artist Of The Floating World, which won that year's Whitbread Prize, may be a great novel, but it just misses out on that elite company.
